Armen Donelian Trio: Oasis

Armen Donelian è pianista raffinato, autore di notevoli lavori per piano solo (clicca qui per leggere la recensione dell’ottimo Mystic Heights) e apprezzato collaboratore del grande e sfortunato Tom Chapin (clicca qui per leggere la recensione del loro Quartet Language). Nella sua ultima registrazione, Oasis, documenta la propria formazione in trio con il bassista David Clark e il batterista George Schuller.

Anche per la scelta di brani in larga parte originali, il lavoro ruota attorno ad atmosfere soffuse, con momenti di classicismo, sempre comunque permeati da una ritmicità jazzistica, in verità piuttosto convenzionale. Tutto ciò tende a celare la qualità dei musicisti, che è molto alta, con Donelian che conferma un grande tocco e una notevole sensibilità armonica, Clark che ha momenti davvero strepitosi (si ascolti ad esempio l’incipit di “Django”) e Schuller abile ad adattarsi alle mutevoli esigenze espressive dei due.

Certo, il disco rimane complessivamente su territori conosciuti; tuttavia non manca di bei momenti, come “Lady of Ghent”, dedicato da Donelian alla moglie, o la già citata, splendida rilettura di “Django”.
