David Lopato: Many Moons

Mettendo a frutto il poco tempo lasciato libero dai suoi impegni didattici, David Lopato ha registrato un lungo disco che raccoglie composizioni scritte nell'arco di un trentennio e che testimoniano non solo il suo mondo ma anche i suoi interessi, i suoi studi e la sua attività accademica. Quindi, non solo jazz in senso stretto (nel quale vanta collaborazioni con musicisti del calibro di Ray Anderson, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Mark Helias, Jane Ira Bloom, Gerry Hemingway, e Wadada Leo Smith...) ma pure il mondo dei gamelan indonesiani, le percussioni africane, le colonne sonore, l'attività di produttore, praticamente tutto quello che ha a che fare con la musica.

Le tante lune del titolo del disco riflettono gli stati d'animo che cambiano da un brano all'altro. C'è proprio di tutto, dal bop di "Reflexology" (e non poteva essere altro con un titolo così), al piano stride di "The Big Bad Wolf Ain't So Bad After All" il tributo al bluegrass di "Fly Brook," le atmosfere sognanti di "Inside You" e "Wishin Willie Well" e via così, passando per Conlon Nancarrow nel "Piano Roll 1," arrivando in un "African Village" e chiudendo con la "Peace March" che è un movimento tratto dai una sua suite scritta in occasione dei tragici fatti dell'11 settembre.

Tanta varietà quindi, tanti stili messi insieme, rielaborati e rivisti con la sua immaginazione di musicista totale. A tratti il tutto può apparire un pò artificioso, difficile da ascoltare tutto in una volta. I singoli brani appaiono invece ricchi di verve e di idee.
