Winard Harper Sextet: Make It Happen

Winard Harper è un batterista che lavora da tempo con questo gruppo con cui, cosa non sempre possibile per chi segue la strada del bop più o meno "verace", cerca sempre di portare novità nella sua musica, di mischiare le carte con armonie e ritmi inusuali per il genere che fa. Gli ospiti che ha invitato, come il sassofonista contralto Antonio Hart ed il trombonista Wycliffe Gordon, si integrano perfettamente rendendo così la musica varia e ricca di sorprese, oltre che a dare la classica marcia in più alle esecuzioni con il loro strabiliante virtuosismo: basti ascoltare "Make It Happen", con l'introduzione di Gordon al didgeridoo e poi il suo assolo al trombone su un organo che più soul non si può!

Come si puó vedere dalla formazione le percussioni africane sono presenti in abbondanza e danno colore ad un album lungo, quasi un'ora e venti minuti, che così si ascolta tutto d'un fiato senza problemi. L'approccio agli standards è fatto con la dovuta fantasia, ad esempio immettendo nel "Segment" d'apertura, un brano di Charlie Parker, ritmi latini dall'indubbio fascino.

Oltre ad essere un eccellente batterista Harper è pure un bravo leader e produttore, che sa guidare con fantasia il gruppo con cui lavora di solito ed immettervi idee nuove. Allo stesso tempo sa ben coordinare i brani presentati in un quadro coerente che fra bop, latin, brani di sola percussione in stile afro, ha i mezzi per affascinare all'ascolto un vasto pubblico. Il suo è un album costruito unendo calore esecutivo e raffinatezza nella produzione, che presenta un bop che assimila da quello che c'é intorno, musicalmente, senza perdere le radici della tradizione.
