Paul Motian: Lost in a Dream

Paul Motian torna a registrare al Village Vanguard. E lo fa con un trio, formazione che esalta al massimo grado la sua poetica asciutta, spigolosa, immersa nei silenzi. Il gioco trigonometrico che scolpisce e attraversa lo spazio è sempre stato un motivo di stimolo, di riflessione, di approfondimento per il lavoro del batterista. Un'attrazione iniziata con Bill Evans e Scott LaFaro, che poi ha imboccato strade proprie con diverse varianti di organico: il trio con sax e contrabbasso, quello con sax e chitarra, sviluppato a lungo con Bill Frisell e Joe Lovano.

Questa nuova versione strumentale, con Jason Moran al pianoforte e Chris Potter al sax tenore, scandisce una tappa successiva sullo stesso percorso tracciato insieme a Frisell e Lovano. Il pianoforte che subentra alla chitarra definisce un campo timbrico più ristretto, più rigoroso, ma non per questo meno propenso a soluzioni aperte. Anzi, ne guadagna l'aspetto ascetico, scheletrico, enigmatico della musica di Motian, che galleggia senza gravità come tela di ragno.

Molto merito va a un Jason Moran che si pone sulla stessa lunghezza d'onda del batterista, evocando silenzi e tracciando cupe trame enigmatiche, a tratti taglienti e corrosive, a tratti più delicate, ma sempre dense di senso. Lo si ascolti nell'introduzione di "Casino" e insieme al sublime Motian nelle prime battute di "Lost in a Dream".

La musica che ne scaturisce è di altissima suggestione, e il terzo vertice del triangolo, Chris Potter, vi si immerge con forza e imbocca percorsi titanici. Musica che spesso acquista una densità febbrile, come nel caso del duetto tra piano e batteria in "Drum Song," vecchio cavallo di battaglia di Motian. Ma il cui disegno generale resta definito, incisivo come in un'acquaforte, filigranato in senso quasi orientale.
