Ralph Alessi & This Against That: Look
Non può che far piacere, dunque, avere per le mani questo Look (quarto disco firmato dal trombettista newyorchese in oltre quindici anni di carriera) e constatare, ancora una volta, che le doti di Alessi vanno ben oltre lo stereotipo della spalla di lusso.
Sul musicista c’è poco da aggiungere a quanto già detto e ripetuto in tante occasioni. La maestria di Alessi è risaputa: quel tono immacolato, puro, sobrio, dal sapore decisamente europeo è diventato un marchio di fabbrica ed una presenza costante nelle riletture “classiche” di Uri Caine.
Sorprende, invece, lo spessore dell’Alessi compositore. Una felicità di scrittura che conquista fin dalla prima traccia: incantano le delicate ed eteree melodie di “Hands” e “Brown Hat”; funzionano i temi complessi e accattivanti di “At the Seams”, “Old Beady Eyes” e “Look” (forse il vertice dell’intera scaletta). Da sottolineare anche l’abilità del leader nel gestire al meglio le risorse della band attraverso arrangiamenti preziosi, precisi e mai scontati. Emblematico, a tal proposito, il ruolo del pianista Andy Milne nell’ipnotica “It’s Just a Toy” o nella già citata “Look”.
A completare la line-up del gruppo ribattezzato “This Against That” (alla seconda prova dopo l’esordio omonimo del 2002 - per leggerne la recensione clicca qui - a cui avevano partecipato Jason Moran e Don Byron) contribuiscono il basso impeccabile di Drew Gress e la batteria caracollante dell’ottimo Mark Ferber. Ospite gradito in alcune tracce il tenore caldo di Ravi Coltrane (splendido il dialogo serrato con la tromba di Alessi in “It’s Just a Toy”).
Se esiste la ricetta del perfetto mainstream moderno non deve essere poi molto diversa da quella proposta lungo queste dodici tracce.
