Ohad Talmor Newsreel: Long Forms

Maturato accanto a Lee Konitz con cui ha inciso vari dischi in tre distinti progetti (il nonet del grande sax contralto, il Konitz-Talmor String Project e la big band a loro nome), Ohad Talmor è tra gli esponenti più creativi della sua generazione. La sua statura di compositore, supportata dalla formazione classica e dall'interesse per molte espressioni musicali, caratterizza il suo impegno nelle varie formazioni che guida: il trio, il sestetto, in nonetto e la big band.

Sono con lui partner di lunga data, con cui ha già inciso nel 2008 l'album Newsreel pubblicato, con la nota lungimiranza, dall'etichetta Auand. Rispetto a quell'eccentrico lavoro, ricco di riferimenti eterogenei, il disco attuale è stilisticamente concentrato verso il jazz d'avanguardia, in un rigoroso equilibrio tra elementi cameristici e libera improvvisazione post-free.

Il lungo e seducente (quasi 13 minuti) "Scent," coniuga momenti sospesi e meditativi di grande fascino (un lungo intervento in rubato del piano) ad altri intensi, con sax e tromba che dialogano in un clima tagliente. Sempre di gran pregio (ma lontano da riferimenti cameristici) è l'ancor più esteso "Musique Anodine," che vede protagonisti in lunghi assoli Shane Endsley, Miles Okazaki, Jacob Sacks e lo stesso Talmor, in un'orchestrazione che passa dai tratti iterativi e soffusi a un finale vibrante. Tra questi due poli espressivi si collocano anche gli altri brani del disco. Se "Casado" si snoda in clima cameristico, "Layas Lines" sono costruiti su ritmi complessi e accesi confronti improvvisati.

Un disco tanto articolato e ricco nelle dinamiche quanto accattivante e di gran presa negli interventi solistici.
