Primo album live di Ted Nash in venticinque anni di carriera, Live at Dizzy's ne fa rilucere le superbe doti di improvvisatore e multistrumentista. Già vincitore di un Grammy Awards per la direzione orchestrale del CD Portrait in Seven Shades (2011), il cinquantottenne musicista di Los Angeles si impone altresì per una cifra compositiva sapiente e sofisticata, esaltata dalle sinuose trame per flauto-sax-vibrafono.

Le magnifiche composizioni di Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, Johnny Mandel ed Henry Mancini fanno il resto, esaltando lo stato di grazia di un magnifico quintetto.

Rilucono soprattutto arrangiamenti fluidi ed ariosi per una musica dalla decisa dimensione collettiva, chiaroscurale nei timbri e talora esuberante nei ritmi. Ne risulta un'ora di grande musica, con sofisticata mutevolezza d'accenti e felice gioco di contrappunti. Stilisticamente in sintonia con il leader, i quattro compagni di viaggio si rivelano indispensabili per realizzare uno dei migliori CD dell'intera carriera di Nash.

Live at Dizzy's è una chiara dimostrazione di quanto la pratica del jazz mainstream possa essere avvincente, se sostenuta da originalità ed inventiva.
