Joe Fonda, Jesper Zeuthen, Jose Lencastre & Rodrigo Amado

Bassist Joe Fonda's new Eyes On The Horizon is a must listen. He turned to musicians he has great familiarity with—pianist Satoko Fujii, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and drummer Tiziano Tononi—to create a tribute to Wadada, his former teacher and mentor. This is uncompromising music. There are several new albums by saxophonists in this edition that should be listened to as well: Danish legend Jesper Zeuthen with fellow Danes percussionist Marilyn Mazur and bassist Anders Christensen, Hugo Costa with William Parker and Dutch drummer Philipp Ernsting, Portuguese powerhouse Rodrigo Amado with his trio the attic sweetened by the piano of Eve Risser, two from Jose Lencastre with different trio lineups, Daniel Carter on a new release by guitarist sally gates, and Johannes Ludwig of the Nano Brothers with their German Jazz Prize-nominated Ascend Flowers. That's just the new releases; there's more saxophone from Marty Ehrlich, Jeff Lederer, Jason Robinson, and Darius Jones, plus two more tracks ready for the ongoing project The Last Trane To Africa by percussionist Ian Dogole. People get reedy!
