Erica Lindsay - Sumi Tonooka: Initiation
La collaborazione tra lei e la pianista Sumi Tomooka esiste da oltre un decennio ma questo lavoro è il primo registrato in studio e s'avvale della collaborazione del grande Rufus Reid al contrabbasso e del bravo Bob Braye alla batteria, che purtroppo è deceduto qualche tempo dopo.
La registrazione risale all'ottobre del 2004 ed è fortemente intrisa di atmosfere coltraniane e aperture modali. Sorretta da una ritmica impeccabile la Lindsay si fa apprezzare per l'eloquio luminoso, il sincero feeling, l'eleganza formale ed i cantabili assoli. Sumi Tonooka, che ha scritto tutte le composizioni, accompagna con sensibilità e discrezione, intervenendo con apprezzabili assoli.
Siamo di fronte ad un album di buona qualità, anche se i suoi ambiti espressivi sono stati oggetto di ampia esplorazione: le interpretazioni sono però d'ottimo livello e le scelte espressive abbastanza varie da mantere alta l'attenzione degli ascoltatori. A liriche ballad ("Mingus Mood," "The Gift") e danzanti percorsi modali come "South Street," seguono brani dalle soluzioni meno consuete come "Serpent's Tale" che inizia con un libero confronto improvvistato sax/contrabbasso. Oppure "Initiation" e "Yes" vicini al clima delle avanguardie storiche.
