Bobby Avey: Inhuman Wilderness

Un trio che si allarga a quartetto in metà delle tracce interpreta Inhuman Wilderness, quinto lavoro a nome del trentaduenne pianista Bobby Avey, ancora poco noto da noi ma piuttosto affermato negli USA. Giustamente, si può dire ascoltando l'album, che ne documenta le idee musicali moderne e inquiete, ma anche la maestria alla tastiera.

Collaboratore di Dave Liebman e studioso della musica haitiana, alla quale si ispira in certi passaggi reiterati e percussivi, Avey ha scelto per tema ispiratore del lavoro, come da titolo, l'idea di imperfezione, di inquietudine, che infatti irrompe fin dalla prima traccia, in trio, dall'andamento nervosamente frammentario, che conduce a un insistito e ipnotico pedale percussivo del piano. Ma che poi torna quasi ovunque, con il supporto suprattutto del batterista Jordan Perlson, incluse le tracce ove è presente il sax contralto di John O'Gallagher: qui l'andamento è di un jazz moderno privo di temi portanti e che vive invece sulla complessità delle strutture e sulle variazioni dinamiche.

Interessante anche la prova di Avey in solitudine, "Rent the Sky," anche in questo caso nervosa e cangiante, fortemente caratterizzata da un tambureggiante sviluppo dinamico che sfocia in una catartica conclusione più quieta. E che, non casualmente, prelude all'ultima traccia, ancora in quartetto, forse la sola nella quale la tensione -tanto dinamica, quanto nervosa -cala per lasciare il posto a una tessitura a proprio modo lirica.

Globalmente un buon lavoro, personale e con molti momenti degni di particolare attenzione.
