Enzo Lanzo: In the Groove

Sassofono baritono, organo hammond, batteria e... tanto groove. Il trio allestito dal batterista tarantino Enzo Lanzo si butta a capofitto nelle atmosfere infuocate anni settanta per una musica che lascia poco spazio ad asettici intellettualismi o cervellotiche elucubrazioni. Perché In the Groove è ritmo allo stato puro, energia che sprizza da tutti pori, melodie che arrivano dritte al cuore, arrangiamenti che coniugano l'enfasi narrativa con compostezza formale.

Le composizioni non originali portano firme da capogiro - Monk, Corea, Miles - ma il profondo rispetto che nutre nei confronti di questi numi tutelari non impedisce al trio di interpretarne la scrittura con verve, fantasia e originalità. Soprattutto l'hammond di Di Modugno, privilegiando una sonorità decisamente liquida, contribuisce a sbilanciare gli impasti timbrici sul versante di un soul jazz quasi psichedelico. D'altro canto il sax baritono di Rossano Emili àncora il flusso sonoro alla tradizione dei grandi baritonisti della storia del jazz, creando un effetto di grande suggestione e sicura presa sull'ascoltatore.

Il disco è dedicato a Roy Haynes e alla sua musica, ma In The Groove rivela una preziosità nascosta tra le righe, quelle scritte dal compianto Pierpaolo Faggiano nella forma di note di copertina. Puntuali, precise, accorate ed esaustive, rimangono la testimonianza di uno spirito libero, appassionato, alla perenne ricerca dell'essenza profonda delle cose della vita e dell'animo umano.
