Le linee chitarristiche di Stein sono libere da convenzioni armoniche, un pò sulla via di un Joe Morris o di Bernie Nix, a volte astratte a costruire una bellezza in cui mancano gli angoli ed i confini. Il free jazz su chitarra non è più una novità. Eppure oggi Billy Stein riesce a stupire ancora con le sue invenzioni, con il suo linguaggio così personale, al di fuori di qualunque scuola e convenzione: bop nella sonorità della chitarra, free nelle linee di note che volano accompagnate dal possente contrabbasso e dalla batteria che sparge colori intorno.
Un linguaggio originale ed onesto il suo, che sfugge ai soliti modelli scolastici, che cerca l'accumulo e la dispersione in un incedere orizzontale collettivo, in brani che diventano un campo di possibilità ignote cui qualunque limite starebbe stretto.
