Michael Moore Quintet: Home Game
La registrazione - che è di qualche anno prima, del 1988 - è infatti felicissima per equilibrio dei materiali tematici, varietà di atmosfere, costruzione formale, essenzialità degli interventi solisti: ci sono cose più astratte e avventurose come "Suburban Housewives" [che consente a Robertson una delle sue memorabili performance] accanto a melodie ariose come quella di "Providence" o ai profumi rétro-monk di una "Debbie Warden" o di "Breathing Out Of Habit".
[Ri]ascoltando un lavoro come questo viene da pensare quanta varietà e fantasia innervasse il jazz creativo di quegli anni: pur con coordinate di moderata volontà iconoclasta e senza perdere di vista un'armonia comunicativa di fondo, i cinque componenti del quintetto [occhio anche al piano di Hersch, capace di improvvisi guizzi] danno fondo a tutta la fantasia necessaria per dare ai bei temi di Moore - che al contralto alterna i clarinetti - la profondità che richiedono. Da riscoprire e, questa volta, non dimenticare più.
