Howard Britz: Here I Stand

I pregi di questo Here I Stand si possono individuare in una spiccata eleganza che pervade l’intero lavoro, nell’abilità compositiva di chi ha assimilato e studiato profondamente la storia della musica afroamericana, nell’uso di arrangiamenti che passano con disinvoltura dalle stringatezze di un jazz classicamente acustico all’enfasi lussureggiante tipica di formazioni più numerose. Non perdendo mai di vista il buon gusto, ed è cosa non da poco.

Si va così dal gustoso calipso di “Yaakology“, alla struggente “Goodbye, for Dad“, dal funky ammorbidito di “Lucky Friday the 13th“ al modale “Scatterburg“ passando per il 7/4 di “Martha’s Song“, dedicato alla moglie. La costruzione dei brani è piuttosto canonica nell’alternarsi di sezioni d’insieme e parti solistiche, ma i musicisti sono maggiormente interessati a creare opportuni amalgama timbrici piuttosto che ad esibire assoli muscolari e pirotecnici.

Howard Britz, nato a Londra ma maturato artisticamente negli States, confeziona con Here I Stand un album godibile, ad alto tasso melodico che piacerà assai agli amanti di un jazz raffinato e rilassante.
