Jean-Paul Brodbeck: Hang on Hippie

Il trentacinquenna pianista svizzero Jean-Paul Brodbeck è reduce da un passato da ragazzo prodigio che lo ha visto debuttare sul palco a soli quindici anni con Lionel Hampton. Da allora tanta acqua è passata sotto ai ponti e Brodbeck giunge al suo terzo album scegliendo la formula del quintetto che vede come componente più noto il chitarrista austriaco Wolfgang Muthspiel nel cui quartetto il pianista suona da tempo.

Più che al periodo hippie evocato nel titolo dell'album, questa musica fa pensare agli yuppies degli anni ottanta e novanta: ci troviamo infatti ad ascoltare un discreto jazz elettrico venato di fusion, senza troppi scossoni, con una ritmica competente e assennata e solisti che sanno il fatto loro. Manca forse un pizzico di sale a livello progettuale, manca il sacro fuoco che accende gli sguardi e indica la direzione per il futuro.

Alla fine ci rimane fra le dita una musica un po' impalpabile, ben eseguita, ma derivativa e quasi mai in grado di innestare le marce alte. Il percorso scelto è poco ondulato e il viaggio risulta essere prevedibile. In questo contesto il leader risulta più interessante al piano elettrico, strumento che gli consente di essere più frizzante e incisivo. Ma ci vuole ben altro per far decollare l'astronave.
