Erede della grande tradizione sassofonistica di Chicago, il settantenne Ari Brown pubblica il suo quarto album da leader confermando gli aspetti chiave del suo stile: timbro magniloquente e ricco di sfumature, fraseggio fluente, marcato senso del blues, viva energia con cui sostiene lunghi e rapsodici assoli.
Nel suo strumento si rinnova lo spirito ecumenico, già condiviso con Fred Anderson e Von Freeman, che fonde l'hard bop degli anni cinquanta con le forme della black popular music, terreno di provenienza di Ari Brown prima del suo ingresso, nel 1971, nell'AACM. L'attrattiva di questo disco viene dunque dalla capacità di Brown e compagni di evocare, con feeling e partecipazione, gli stilemi chiave della tradizione musicale afroamericana. Il percorso musicale si snoda nel pieno rispetto di regole consolidate lasciando che ispirazione e fantasia alimentino lo svolgersi degli assoli.

Quasi tutte le composizioni sono del leader, eccetto i due temi di Duke Ellington e John Coltrane e "3bop 4 Mal" di Kirk Brown, il fratello di Ari che l'ha dedicata al trombettista Malachi Thompson, scomparso nel 2006. Altri due temi ("One for Ken" e "Give Thanks") sono dedicati rispettivamente alle recenti dipartite del pianista Ken Chaney e della suocera di Ari Brown.
Il repertorio si snoda senza frenesia lasciando spazio a pezzi d'atmosfera, dove prevalgono strutture semplici che fanno respirare la musica: il modale "Enka" venato di colori latini (e reminiscenze di Gato Barbieri); il coltraniano "Lonnie's Lament" sostenuto da un ritmo reggae; il lirico "In A Sentimental Mood"; l'intensa e celebrativa "Give Thanks" con il leader al sax soprano.
Tra i partner spicca il ricercato Kirk Brown al pianoforte.
