Earle Brown: Folio and Four Systems

Nella produzione di Earle Brown “Folio” e “Four Systems” (1954) rappresentano una sorta di condicio sine qua non per la comprensione della sua intera produzione, poiché, insieme ad altre coeve composizioni, contengono gli embrioni di alcuni percorsi di ricerca sviluppati nei successivi cinquant’anni dal compositore americano. È dunque assolutamente gradito il CD dato alle stampe dalla Tzadik che propone le due opere e quanto in aggiunta è stato composto (e scritto) da Brown in quel periodo, affidandolo all’interpretazione di musicisti di assoluto rilievo e interesse nel panorama della musica contemporanea e non solo.

Entrando nel merito delle composizioni, “Folio and Four Systems” contiene 13 lavori scritti nel solo biennio 1952-1954, periodo in cui Brown è essenzialmente concentrato su aspetti composizionali e sul processo di performance “avendo estremi di controllo finito ed estremi di infinita ambiguità”. Nulla di più vago per capire musiche che all’ascolto paiono ancora sospese, in qualche modo sincopate, che pur facendo vedere una forte attenzione al controllo gestuale, presentano più considerevoli tracce di quella ambiguità indicata da Brown.

L’ossatura teoretica è costituita da “Folio”, “Four Systems” (nelle sue varie versioni) e “December 1952”, anche se in ciascuna composizione si ritrovano elementi e prospettive utili alla comprensione generale.

Gli interpreti che hanno contribuito alla registrazione (tra cui ricordiamo Stephen Drury, Merzbow, Joan la Barbara, Ron Kuivila, Wadada Leo Smith, Ikue Mori, Silvie Courvoisier, Ed Tomney, Morton Subotnik, Mark Feldman e lo stesso Brown) hanno offerto una lettura decisamente attuale (dando quasi un senso “nuovo” al tutto) di quelle composizioni, senza tuttavia intaccare lo spirito originario con cui sono state pensate. In questo aiuta la lettura dei diversi estratti e scritti che sono stati inclusi nel libretto.

“Folio and Four Systems” rappresenta una finestra per la comprensione di Brown, compositore in Europa ancora poco conosciuto (e interpretato) ma di assolutissimo interesse e rilievo.
