Pharoah Sanders: Finest
Non si fa un torto a Sanders e alla sua "collocazione" nelle vicende del jazz contemporaneo se si sottolinea come la sua parabola artistica sia stata emblematica della parziale incapacità dei semi del free di germogliare in idee nuove. Certo gli anni Settanta, con la definitiva "vittoria" delle logiche rock-commerciali, non devono essere stati il terreno più congeniale per chi aveva già radicalizzato il proprio messaggio nel decennio precedente, ma la musica contenuta in questo disco - tuttaltro che brutta, per carità - suona come una disarmata resa alla storicizzazione di quanto era meglio forse sottrarre a questi procedimenti.
Da sempre legato a doppio filo alla figura di John Coltrane, Sanders paga qui più di un omaggio al "maestro" a partire dal titolo del primo disco, Africa, per proseguire con alcuni temi coltraniani ["Naima"] o l'approccio alle ballads. Accompagnato da affidabili musicisti come i pianisti John Hicks e William Henderson, i contrabbassisti Curtis Lundy e Stafford James e batteristi tra cui spicca Idris Muhammad, Sanders rifà sostanzialmente se stesso, con un suono robusto e caldo che sa cavalcare grooves rotondi ["Origin"] o le trame armoniche più delicate.
Godibile e rassicurante, questo versante di Sanders, garantisce comunque un'ora e dieci di ottima musica a chi non importi il gentile imborghesimento espressivo del sassofonista. Classico anzitempo.
