Paolo Fresu, Dino Rubino, Daniele di Bonaventura, Marco Bardoscia: Ferlinghetti
Il film ebbe una lunga gestazione, dal 2006 al 2022, vedendo la luce quando Ferlinghetti era già scomparso; le musiche sono invece state registrate nell'ottobre del 2020 e prendono spunto da episodi della vita del poeta-editore, descrivendole attraverso atmosfere anche molto diverse tra loro: spesso liriche, grazie alle linee tracciate dal trombettista e alla sensibilità espressa al bandoneon da Daniele di Bonaventura, ora più astratte, specie per gli interventi pianistici di Dino Rubino—lo sia ascolti per esempio nel brano eponimo e in "Island of the Mind," di Fresu, o in "Endless Life," di Marco Bardoscia —, ora persino un po' acide, per l'uso misurato ma efficacie dell'elettronica —per esempio nell'iniziale "I Was an American Boy" o in "Tyrannus Nix" di Fresu.
Affresco suggestivo e di immediata fruibilità, questo lavoro ha una piena autonomia anche indipendentemente dalle immagini che nasce per commentare ed è impreziosito dagli assoli degli ottimi interpreti. Pur nella coerenza delle tredici tracce, a parere di chi scrive spiccano le due composizioni di Di Bonaventura, "The Macaronis Scene" e soprattutto la toccante "Back Roads to Far Places," assieme a "Where Books Were Trees," di Rubino, ove brilla un duetto tra il bandoneon e il contrabbasso, con Bardoscia all'archetto.
