Glenn Zaleski: Fellowship

Originario del Massachusetts, il pianista Glenn Zaleski è uno dei giovani talenti emergenti sulla scena newyorchese. Questo Fellowship è il suo secondo lavoro, sempre per Sunnyside, dopo My Ideal, del 2015.

Si tratta in buona sostanza di un classico esempio di piano trio, dall'impostazione piuttosto tradizionale, ma diversamente dal precedente album, basato su standard e cover, qui le composizioni sono quasi tutte della penna del leader, con la sola esclusione di due omaggi, uno a John Coltrane («Central Park West»), l'altro al pianista Duke Pearson («Is That So»).

E proprio quei due non originali contribuiscono a definire la cifra generale del lavoro, caratterizzata da uno swing rilassato, esemplificato proprio dal brano di Pearson, aperto su sofisticati fraseggi e distese narrazioni, a sua volta esemplificati da quello di Coltrane, eseguito con grande delicatezza e emotività.

Questo stile è coerente allo spirito del lavoro, nel quale gli omaggi sono in realtà numerosi: al vibrafonista Peter Schlamb la conclusiva «P.S.», non a caso con momenti di reiterazione percussiva che rimandano allo strumento del dedicatario; alla città di Pittsburgh e ai suoi luminari musicali Billy Strayhorn, Erroll Garner e Ahmad Jamal la dolcemente malinconica «Westinghous»; al Brubeck Institute la title track, nella quale meglio che altrove Zeleski dà prova delle sue capacità alla tastiera.

I due partner, Dezron Douglas al contrabbasso e Craig Weinrib alla batteria -assecondano il pianista con professionalità e discrezione, prendendosi la scena qua e là -il primo in particolare nella breve «Out Front», introduzione per contrabbasso della successiva «Homestead».

Disco curato e ben eseguito, Fellowship manca forse di un pizzico di personalità, ma mette in luce un musicista dal sicuro avvenire.
