Mark Masters Ensemble: Farewell Walter Dewey Redman

Mark Masters è un artista di spicco della Capri Records che da tempo dedica le proprie qualità di arrangiatore alle opere di alcuni musicisti come Lee Konitz, Gary Mac Farland e Clifford Brown. Quando, nel 2006, si appresta ad entrare in sala di registrazione con Dewey Redman per un disco dedicato alle sue composizioni, il sassofonista di Forth Worth viene a mancare. Masters convoca all'istante Oliver Lake che assume il ruolo di sassofonista leader e, con un orchestra di sedici elementi, incide Farewell Walter Dewewy Redman.

Benchè Lake possegga una sonorità che ha ben poco da spartire con quella unica di Redman (profonda, borbottante, dal vibrato perfettamente controllato) la scelta del contraltista si rivela azzeccata perché la qualità dei suoi interventi è ineccepibile e lo spirito delle sue improvvisazioni sembra evocare quello ribelle del grande collega.

I meriti di Masters, i cui arrangiamenti risultano per la verità un po' scontati, risiedono nella scelta dei solisti - oltre a Lake, si mettono in evidenza Tim Hagans alla tromba e Peter Erskine alla batteria - e nell'aver creato una tessitura a larghe maglie ideale per esaltare le loro qualità.

Ma i brani più convincenti, azzeccati e commoventi risultano essere "Transit" e il conclusivo "Adieu mon Redman". Poco più di quattro minuti nei quali il quartetto formato da Lake, Hagans, Carpenter ed Erskine improvvisa liberamente rendendo vera testimonianza dell'arte di Walter Dewey Redman.
