Nevio Zaninotto Art Project: Farewell Dance

Esperto sassofonista dal solido impianto e ottimo compositore, Nevio Zaninotto è qui alla guida di un quintetto nel quale spiccano la chitarra di Roberto Cecchetto e, a turno, le batterie di U.T. Gandhi e Paolo Mappa. I brani in programma, tutti a firma di Zaninotto, esaltano la sua duttilità strumentale, mettendo accanto il neo-bop di “Bop Boulevard”, il modern Jazz di “Mad Box” e il più popolaresco (a dispetto del titolo) “Reggaebossawaltz”, fino alla trascrizione del corale BWV 250 di Johan Sebastian Bach.

Tale varietà permette a Zaninotto di misurarsi su ben diversi tessuti sonori, così da evidenziare sia fluidità ritmica che intensità espressiva al tenore (fluttuante tra il Coltrane di “Chickpatrane” e il Brecker di “Don’s Frame”, palesemente dedicata a Grolnick), rapidità di fraseggio e lucidità del suono al soprano (vicino a McCandless nello splendido brano bachiano, più prossimo a Liebman in “Farewell Dance”).

Accanto a Zaninotto si mette in luce particolarmente Cecchetto, che più volte si prende la scena con eccellenti assoli, ed è il creatore della suggestiva atmosfera elettrica che introduce “Chor 347”. Decisivo il ruolo di Renato Chicco nei brani in cui è impegnato all’hammond.

Un bel lavoro, sfaccettato e piacevole, che mostra diverse delle molte facce del jazz, sempre con misura ed eleganza.
