Paul Giallorenzo's Gitgo: Emergent

Il pianista newyorchese (ma di base a Chicago) Paul Giallorenzo si ispira per questo Emergent alle incisioni degli anni '60 di e con Mal Waldron, Cecil Taylor, Lowell Davidson. Il risultato è un disco estremamente intrigante, con una ritmica swingante ed il batterista Marc Riordan sugli scudi grazie ad un suono che sembra uscito proprio dai dischi di quel periodo. A completare la formazione, due veterani dei gruppi di Ken Vandermark: Jeb Bishop, che mostra di avere le radici anche nel blues e nel jazz arcaico, ed il sassofonista Mars Williams, che si diverte a tirare fuori assoli zigzaganti, oppure, su "Imprograf," a far sentire il suo ruggito free.

Giallorenzo è un bravo leader che sa immettere nuove idee in quello che è un sound che si muove a cavallo tra free e bop. Proprio la libertà di andare nell'una o nell'altra direzione introduce quell'elemento di sorpresa che spiazza le aspettative dell'ascoltatore.

Qualche brano, come l'iniziale "On Marks" mette di buonumore, con quel ritmo che àncora tutta l'esecuzione. Oppure "The Swinger," con un Bishop swingante e con un bel growl, il pianoforte che si muove sugli accordi giusti e Mars Williams che si adegua all'atmosfera da blues primitivo! Si chiude con un brano, "Spring Chicken," dal ritmo più travolgente quasi da Braxton anni '70, quello del quartetto pianoless con Kenny Wheeler o George Lewis.
