Ecco un`incisione che ci permette di scoprire un manipolo di giovani jazzisti tedeschi e, da quell'angolo visuale, a quello che succede in area mainstream a Berlino. Magari risulta ovvio che in una città cosí grande succeda tanto; ma è molto meno ovvio che giovani appena diplomati siano in grado di perseguire le proprie idee con tale fiducia in sé stessi ed intelligenza.

Qui abbiamo nella formazione un classico quintetto bop, e la tentazione (specie quando si è freschi di diploma) di mostrare quanto si è appena imparato, è tanta. Invece, i componenti del gruppo fanno un gioco di squadra, con composizioni che hanno autorità, originali per le idee realizzatavi.

I cinque non dimenticano le radici europee, eppure sanno evitare di replicare un genere di cui gli esempi ormai abbondano. Sanno rivitalizzarlo, costruire assoli ricchi di energia, brani che avranno sì la loro dose di sentimento ma che non vogliono fare addormentare nessuno. La ritmica fa il proprio lavoro a dovere, i fiati si danno da fare con assoli ricchi di spessore. E non c´è un brano, tutti molto lunghi, in cui si giri a vuoto.
