Trent'anni (a breve), nativo di Beirut ma francese d'adozione, Ibrahim Maalouf è personaggio piuttosto stimolante, con collaborazioni che spaziano da Archie Shepp a Sting. Da noi lo si è visto al penultimo Bergamo Jazz duettare con la conturbante danzatrice Fanny Coulm, mentre di un paio d'anni precedente è questo suo album d'esordio, di cui il trombettista libanese è l'assoluto protagonista (un po' come accade al nostro Li Calzi), pur attorniato da un cospicuo manipolo di coéquipiers, di cui rimane pur tuttavia l'indiscusso deus ex machina.

L'impatto con la sua musica è soffice, quasi "facile" (nel senso di accogliente, anche ammaliante), fra un techno-jazz non troppo spinto e atmosfere maggiormente (fisiologicamente) affacciate su tutta la cultura musicale del bacino mediorientale. Fra le chicche dell'opera, citeremmo il qanûn (cordofono orizzontale arabo-persiano) protagonista unico del terzo brano, che fa virare decisamente il lavoro verso temperature più squisitamente etniche, oltre che sperimentali, in ciò saldato al successivo "Hashish," di cui rappresenta una sorta di prologo. C'è poi un singolare arrangiamento (molto da film noir) della gillespiana "A Night in Tunisia," un nuovo etno-monologo, stavolta per ud, per parte sua connesso al seguente "Shadows," nonché, per qualità intrinseca, a "Verdict," suggellato un po' a sorpresa da una citazione di "Que sera sera".

Due (sedicenti?) bonus tracks chiudono degnamente il lavoro, ribadendo quell'iteratività che ne è fra le principali costanti (a volte persino troppo insistite). Bel disco d'esordio, dunque, per una personalità - come si accennava - da cui è lecito attendersi nuove confortanti prove.
