Talking Cows: Dairy Tales

Il primo CD lo hanno intitolato Bovinity (2006), i quattro olandesi volanti. Ma più che essere "bovini" prestati al jazz i musicisti ambiscono a diventare dei cowboy eleganti. Che non disdegnano di accudire le "mucche" con il Tight, indossare scarpini eleganti con tanto di cravatta à la page.

Nata nel 2004 a opera del sassofonista Frans Vermeerssene del pianista Robert Jan Vermeulen, la band, completata dal bassista Dion Nijland e dal batterista Yonga Sun, sta cercando spazio e seguito nella scena jazz europea. Qual è la sua strategia? Pascolare nei campi sempre fertili del jazz ancien régime.

Il pianismo di Vermeulen ha i connotati ben delineati. L'iniziale "Ruminating," tra muggiti ironici del sax tenore di Vermeerssene, è un chiaro riferimento alla genialità sregolata di Thelonious Monk. Che continua nel suo sincero tributo con "The Virus" (non quello della mucca pazza, of course).

L'attitudine bop del quartetto ha modo di essere esibita al meglio ("For Dewey," "Rollo II"), ma è anche venata di momenti più tranquilli e riflessivi ("Hellaluiah!"), giocosi e divertiti ("Cow's Samba") o tristi ("Answered Prayers"). Ci sono anche spunti molto più "up" ("Clay," "Meantown").

L'album è in parte registrato dal vivo e in parte in studio. Il quartetto se fosse un po' più spregiudicato e meno "devoto" sarebbe ancora più convincente. Ma di tempo ne ha per dimostrare a fondo il senso delle mucche per il jazz...
