Dre Hocevar Trio: Coding Of Evidentiality

Given the title of drummer Dre Hocevar's recording, the question arises: can one classify or identify a system's disorder, i.e. entropy? The liner notes give us a hint. Laurence Donohue-Greene writes, this trio of Hocevar, pianist Bram De Looze and cellist St.Louis, "develop each improvisation compositionally and with tenacious unity." I suspect, when there is human involvement, all improvised music finds some order and yes, eventuality can be coded.

Philosophic and thermodynamic discussions aside, the seven pieces presented by Hocevar's trio alight on a creative perch that ties the work of Marilyn Crispell's trio with Gerry Hemingway to that of trumpeter Peter Evans. "Form of the Future Thought" begins with an aching sense of unhurried impetus, which then receives the drummer's propulsion cues. De Looze's piano approach here, with his thunderous left hand evokes that of master musician Matthew Shipp. They then turn "Post Resonance 1J7-36" into a minimalist jounced music, it's rattle, tick, and buzz conjures the music of bees alighting on flowers. Hocevar's approach to percussion is of the same philosophy as Tyshawn Sorey, Tim Daisy, and Paul Lytton. They all seem to have internal rhythm, a personal language that is not always readily apparent or written in any book.

Coding of Evidentiality takes us into that language, one shared by these three. St.Louis displays his talents in the three minute "Cello Interlude No. 1," filling the space with energy and surprise and pianist Bram De Looze catches a bit of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" at the onset of "Second Portrait Of The Exemplary..." before he also begins to code the evidential entropy. The signature piece here, and perhaps signal of a future project is "Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)" with electronics artist Sam Pluta, whose live processing has backed artists such as Peter Evans, Evan Parker, and Craig Taborn. His input adds another bit of disorder, with his frizzled science fiction machine language, none of which alters the ultimate organizing principles of this trio. This is challenging and quite rewarding music.
