Donny McCaslin: Casting for Gravity
Il leader si mostra in forma olimpica nell'iniziale "Stadium Jazz," dove mette a segno un paio di soli dall'ottimo impatto melodico; risulta più introverso e pronto nel prendere tangenti meno prevedibili in "Says Who"; sa farsi da parte nei momenti in cui predomina l'anima funky del basso elettrico di Tim Lefebvre o lì dove i tappeti di synth introducono atmosfere rarefatte e completamente rilassate. Il carattere espressivo di questo lavoro varia in maniera decisa da situazioni mainstream ad altre che si avvicinano a un'idea di jazz moderno intriso di elementi elettronici, fino a passaggi dove il tenorista ruggisce su uno sfondo angolare di matrice free, come nella rivisitazione di "Alpha and Omega" degli scozzesi Boards of Canada.
Album magnificamente suonato, nel quale la voce strumentale di McCaslin risulta predominante, nel suo insieme Casting for Gravity si lascia apprezzare per il lavoro di squadra, come nel brano firmato da Binney "Praia Grande," ma anche nelle situazioni di grande cantabilità, vedi "Love Song for an Echo," dove emerge il pianismo ispirato di Jason Lindner.
