Erik Friedlander: Bonebridge

Forse qualche sprovveduto potrebbe chiedersi cosa ci faccia un violoncello in un gruppo di musica folk, ma invece Friedlander, sin dal primo ascolto di questo suo Bonebridge, sembra proprio voler dimostrare come il suo strumento sia irrinunciabile per suonare musica acustica della tradizione statunitense.

Come si sarà capito infatti, stavolta non stiamo parlando né di avanguardia, né di improvvisazione, né di avant jazz, né tantomeno di musica klezmer: nel cuore del grande violoncellista newyorkese ci sono gli Appalachi, la musica che si suonava nei primi del Novecento nelle bettole del Sud degli States, il folklore arcaico e il blues.

Del resto lui stesso racconta, nel suo sito internet, di essere cresciuto tra quei suoni, grazie ai genitori; quindi questo lavoro rappresenterebbe una sorta di ritorno alle origini della propria formazione di musicista.

Nessuno però si aspetti nulla di troppo scontato quando si parla di Friedlander, anche perché la front-line di questa versione allargata del vecchio Broken Arm Trio è costituita da uno splendido duo (probabilmente inedito in un contesto come questo) violoncello-chitarra (quella di Doug Wamble), che intesse dialoghi in cui si ritrovano il bluegrass, il jazz e in qualche modo le splendide formazioni di Buell Niedlinger capaci di ritrovare le radici comuni tra tradizione afroamericana e fingerpicking.

A rendere del tutto unica questa proposta c'è la collocazione armonica che Friedlander, con quel suo suono inconfondibile, riesce a dare al suo strumento, in grado di rimpiazzare perfettamente il banjo e la chitarra con un pizzicato e con un accompagnamento irresistibile, come si ascolta con grande chiarezza tra gli arpeggi intarsiati nel legno di "Low Country Cupola" o nell'incastro dialogico di violoncello,basso e chitarra della swingante "Tabaha".
