Tom Dempsey - Tim Ferguson Quartet: Beautiful Friendship

Tom Dempsey e Tim Ferguson sono esponenti del mainstream da anni attivi a New York dove suonano, incidono, insegnano (Ferguson ha scritto due manuali sul contrabbasso), e lavorano come sidemen in altri gruppi o in studio. Tutto quello, insomma, che fanno i musicisti professionisti, quando hanno la possibilità di farlo.

Il loro nuovo quartetto è arricchito dalla presenza del sassofonista Joel Frahm e di Elliott Zigmund, illustre batterista degli ultimi trii di Bill Evans, che con le sue bacchette punteggia, commenta, è sempre preciso sul ritmo, e dà insomma un contributo fondamentale alla riuscita del disco.

Alcuni brani, come "Beautiful Friendship," appaiono particolarmente riusciti. Il chitarrista fraseggia come un sassofonista con un bello swing, il suono di gruppo è perfetto, la sezione ritmica in sottofondo lavora alla grande e Joel Frahm si innesta perfettamente. Forse in questo pezzo si nota più che altrove l'amalgama dei quattro, d'altro canto sempre a loro agio su tempi veloci o su ballads, come "Last Summer" e persino con le armonie sghembe di un Thelonious Monk, nel finale "Coming on the Hudson".

Con questo disco Dempsey e Ferguson non rinnovano il jazz odierno, ma - grazie all'aiuto di due compagni ideali - ci offrono un disco di mainstream di ottima fattura.
