Mike Holober: Balancing Act

Non è facile coniugare raffinatezza formale e tensione emotiva, meticolose orchestrazioni e libertà individuale, sottigliezze cameristiche e momenti jazzisticamente impetuosi.
A capo del suo ottetto, Mike Holober offre un appassionante esempio di tutto ciò, realizzando il suo lavoro più maturo e ricercato, a distanza di sei anni dal precedente con la Gotham Jazz Orchestra (Quake, Sunnyside 2009).

Pianista, compositore e insegnante al City College e alla Manhattan School of Music di New York, Holober s'è distinto per alcuni progetti orchestrali con la Vanguard Jazz Orchestra e la WDR Big Band di Colonia. Come sideman ha partecipato a decine di collaborazioni e ha registrato quattro dischi da leader.
Balancing Act è davvero speciale. Un lavoro che non perde freschezza dopo ripetuti ascolti e regala ogni volta nuove emozioni. Il merito va ovviamente condiviso con i musicisti della formazione: la cantante Kate McGarry, il trombettista Marvin Stamm, i sassofonisti Dick Oatts e Jason Rigby, il trombonista Mark Patterson, il contrabbassista John Hebert e il batterista Brian Blade. Allo stesso modo di Gil Evans, Holober sa costruire, anche con un organico stringato, raffinate tessiture orchestrali e sviluppi dinamici sempre cangianti, spesso imprevedibili. Le relazioni con il grande arrangiatore canadese non vanno oltre e il suo stile ha contatti semmai con Bob Brookmeyer e, per gusti cameristici, con John Lewis.

Uno degli aspetti più coinvolgenti dell'opera viene da Kate McGarry, che passa dal ruolo classico di cantante all'uso della voce come strumento. In entrambi i casi i suoi interventi sono esemplari per la purezza espressiva dell'enunciazione e la magia ottenuta nel gioco di spostamenti e sospensioni delle frasi. Come Helen Merrill è un'interprete capace di esaltare il fascino delle melodie ed esprime la sua identità jazzistica nelle sfumature timbriche, nei riverberi della voce, nell'intima colloquialità e nella palpitante tensione emotiva.

La pluralità espressiva del disco si incrementa con gli appassionati interventi di Jason Rigby al sax tenore, del trombettista Marvin Stamm e col superlativo gioco ritmico creato da Brian Blade. Holober ha composto sei degli otto brani in repertorio, tutti molto belli e orchestrati con gusto aristocratico.
La versioni del tema di Billy Joel "Lullabye: Goodnight My Angel" conquista per l'atmosfera rarefatta ed evanescente; "Piece of My Heart," un successo di Janis Joplin, per la palpitante interpretazione della McGarry.
