Misha Mullov-Abbado: Effra

Read "Effra" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Effra is the fourth album from multi-award-winning bassist, composer and arranger Misha Mullov-Abbado. It is a collection of the music he has written for his long-standing sextet over the last four years. An experienced bandleader and multifaceted sideman, his talents have led to him working alongside Tim Garland and Rob Luft. He is probably best known to international audiences from the album Za Górami recorded with Alice Zawadzki and Fred Thomas (ECM, 2024). Effra is dedicated to Brixton, ...

Alice Zawadzki, Fred Thomas, Misha Mullov-Abbado: Za Górami

Read "Za Górami" reviewed by Konstantin Rega

Jazz is all about moving forward and finding new ways to make music that touches hearts and minds. Here London-based vocalist and violinist Alice Zawadzki teams up with pianist and drummer Fred Thomas and double bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado on a stylish and folk-tinged jazz album. Za Górami incorporates folk songs, chamber music and improvisational jazz styles to meld a mesmerizing sound. The trio works hard and succeeds in the balancing act of offering a tune and providing more free-flowing passages. ...

Paul Mottram: Seven Ages Of Man

Read "Seven Ages Of Man" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Throughout history, many have tried to divide the human life cycle into defined stages. The most famous is William Shakespeare's reference to the seven ages in Jaques' speech in As You Like It, the one which starts “All the world's a stage." This was the initial spark which gave composer Paul Mottram the idea for Seven Ages Of Man, Shakespeare's seven ages being Infant, Schoolboy, Lover, Soldier, Judge, Pantaloon and Old Age. Mottram has added two introductory movements, Origins and ...

Tom Green Septet: Tipping Point

Read "Tipping Point" reviewed by Chris May

The second album from British trombonist, composer and arranger Tom Green's Septet follows the little-big-band's locally acclaimed Skyline (Spark), released back in 2015. Rather remarkably, the only change to the lineup since then is the replacement of alto and soprano saxophonist Matthew Herd by Tommy Andrews. Green's specialism appears to be big bands. His other core project is the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, a co-operative 17-piece in which some of the Septet's members play. Patchwork's debut, The Adventures Of ...

Patchwork Jazz Orchestra: The Adventures of Mr Pottercakes

Read "The Adventures of Mr Pottercakes" reviewed by Roger Farbey

Maybe the quickest way to sum-up Patchwork Jazz Orchestra's The Adventures Of Mr Pottercakes would be to appropriate the title of The Who's 1971 compilation album, Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy. For that is exactly what it is and quite a bit more besides. From the very start of the opening title track, there's a reminder of that other big band of young British jazz musicians, Loose Tubes. But since so many of today's leading British jazz musicians emerged from ...

Misha Mullov-Abbado: Cross-Platform Interchange

Read "Cross-Platform Interchange" reviewed by Roger Farbey

As the son of the Italian classical conductor Claudio Abbado and Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova, music was inevitably in British bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado's blood. After graduating in music and composition from Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge he won a scholarship to study double bass at the Royal Academy of Music on its Masters jazz course tutored by virtuosos Jasper Høiby and Michael Janisch amongst others. Cross-Platform Interchange is the follow-up to Mullov- Abbado's 2015 debut album New Ansonia, ...
