Mihaly Dresch Quartet: Argyélus

Nelle note di copertina, Dresch sostiene che le persone, oggi, mancano di una cultura musicale organica, fondata su una chiara percezione di una sistematicità, tipica ad esempio della musica tradizionale indiana oppure, per fare esempi più vicini al nostro, della musica antica transilvana. In mancanza di questo, dice Dresch, non possiamo far altro che mettere insieme dei frammenti (ognuno i suoi), e dare vita dunque ad una cultura inevitabilmente frammentaria.

I frammenti di Dresch sono composizioni originali, brani tradizionali dalle influenze gitane, echi della musica colta ungherese del XX secolo, canzoni popolari (magari con un'atmosfera alla Archie Shepp), ed un capolavoro ellingtoniano.

Frammenti, dicevamo. Inutile quindi cercare unitarietà in un album che, inevitabilmente, non può averne. E però l'esecuzione del quartetto (che in tre brani si arricchisce di un violino e diventa quintetto) riesce comunque a smussare qualche angolo, a ricondurre, almeno nell'intenzione, la musica in un alveo riconoscibile: le grandi e capienti braccia del jazz e dell'improvvisazione.

Detto questo, i brani per noi più interessanti sono quelli in cui la matrice ungherese e gitana emergono maggiormente. Brani dalle radici antiche, ma che suonano alle nostre orecchie come particolarmente nuovi ed originali.
