April showers bring April reissues, well something like that. April isn’t the strongest month so far this year on the reissue parade, but hopefully those showers will bring may ‘flowers.’ I hope to continue to expand this column to include not only jazz and blues reissues but special projects and packages, as well as expand into some other genres - this month ther is a nice selection of bluegrass for our fine readers to consider.

April 6th

  • Albert King Windy City Blues (Stax / Fantasy). This is an exploration of King’s little known recordings from the 1970 sessions with Willie Dixon that never materialized into a full length record, two tunes from 1960 for Prestige, eight tunes with King as a sideman for Sunnyland Slim, The Muddy Waters Band and Billy Boy Arnold and rounding out this collection are three alternate takes with Homesick James.

  • Various Artists ”The Wedding Album: First Dance.” (Verve).

  • Jack McDuff The Prestige Years (Prestige / Fantasy). This collection compiles both live and studio recordings, 14 in total, from 1960 and 1965. This collection features the performances of George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Red Holloway, Gene Ammons, Harold Vick and Lem Winchester. Michael Rozek wrote liner notes.

  • Bunny Berigan The Radio Years 1937-40 (Storyville Jazz Unlimited).

  • Artie Shaw Spotlight Band (Storyville). Featuring Roy Eldridge and Barney Kessel of 32 tunes (71 minutes) culminated from five Armed Forces broadcasts in California recorded in 1945.

  • Christine Adler Christine Adler (Silverwolf).

  • Paul Motian, Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano Paul Motian in Tokio (Winter & Winter). A live recording from 1991.

  • Tangerine Dream Bootleg Boxset, Vol. 2 (Castle / Sanctuary). A five CD remastered (Edgar Froese) box culminated from live performances in 1976-78, 1981 and 1983.

  • Louis Armstrong Golden Jazz (Madacy Records).

  • Peggy Lee Best of Miss Peggy Lee. This is both a CD and a DVD.

  • Christy Doran Corporate Art (Winter & Winter).

  • James Carter Live at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge (Warner Brothers).

  • Peter Herborn Something Personal (Winter & Winter).

  • Dill Jones Davenport Blues (Chiaroscuro).

  • Glenn Miller 100 Anniversaire (EPM Musique).

  • Various Artists More of the Most Relaxing Jazz Music (Denon Records).

  • Various Artists Best of Big Band (Madacy records).

April 13th

  • Cal Tjader ”Best of the Concord Years” (Concord Jazz). This is a double CD set. The legacy of acclaimed bandleader and vibraphonist Cal Tjader lives on through this latest release, The Best of the Concord Years.  This two-CD collection celebrates the last four years of Tjader’s life (1979–82) and some of his most inspiring and renowned works as a legend in Latin jazz.

  • Gene Harris / Scott Hamilton ”At Last” (Concord Jazz). This is a reissue on the SACD format.

  • Oscar Peterson Exclusively for My Friends (Verve / MPS). This is a six volume series available separately.

April 20th

  • James Brown Soul on Top (Verve).

  • Glenn Miller Centennial Collection (Bluebird RCA). This collection features four previously unreleased recordings and a DVD.

  • Various Artists Kid’s Jazz (Verve).

From Chronological Classics:

  • Coleman Hawkins 1950-53. Includes recordings from his JATP appearances.
  • Erroll Garner 1951-52
  • Hot Lips Page 1950-53. Includes some of the last instrumental and vocal performances by this under appreciated artist.
  • Valaida Snow 1940-53. A lot of these recordings happened under the noses of the Nazi’s, as Snow inhabited Europe during WWII.
  • Billy Taylor 1951-52. Includes sessions recorded for Brunswick and Atlantic Records.
  • Elmore James 1951-53
  • Jo-Jo Adams 1946-53
  • Ruth Brown 1951-53. Compiled from Brown’s chart dominating period and includes many of those successes.
  • Jimmy Rushing 1946-53. Basie’s legendary front man performs his blend of Kansas City jazz and blues.


From Delmark Records:

  • Roosevelt Sykes Chicago Boogie. Recording released for the first time on CD (from his Regal recordings that appeared on 78s) from 1950 and 1951.
  • Byther Smith Hold That Train. This is a reissue of the 1980 release that has been expanded with unissued material from this influential Chicago bluesman.


  • Jack Teagarden Father of Jazz Trombone (AVID). This is a 3 disc boxset of Teagarden’s recorded legacy spanning from 1928 to 1947. The bos has 72 tracks and features Benny Goodman, Joe Venuti, Coleman Hawkins, and Eddie Condon.

  • Django Reinhardt Django in Rome 1949-1950 (JSP). This is a four CD collection.

  • Del McCoury High Lonesome and Blue (Rounder Heritage). This collection celebrates this bluegrass legends prolific output for Rounder. This promises to be pure bluegrass enjoyment.

  • Ben Pollack Volume 6: The Whoopee Makers (Jazz Oracle). This collection is culminated from rare recordings from 1928 and 1929. This early big band features some of the earliest sides with Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden and Jimmy McPartland.

  • Anthony Braxton Ninetet (Yoshi’s) 1997, vol. 2 (Leo). This is a collection of two separate 72-minute recordings of Ghost Trance pieces.

  • Various Artists Bluegrass #1’s (Rounder Heritage). A collection of some of bluegrass’s most successful radio songs. Artists on this collection include Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, Rhonda Vincent, and JD Crowe.

  • Eugene Chadbourne & Guests Dr. Chadbourne’s Adventure at the Tonic Guitar Festival Summer 1999 (Leo). This is a two CD collection of a guitar event help at NYC’s Tonic Club, includes members of Sonic Youth, Elliot Sharpe and Alan Licht.

  • Billie Holiday Moanin’ Low (ASV).

  • Various Artists Tea For Two: The Songs of Vincent Youmans (ASV).

  • Cannonball Adderley Autumn Leaves / Alison’s Uncle (Classic Records). This is a two-sided 12” single. These recordings are from the 1958 album ‘Something Else.’

  • BB King Blues in My Heart (Ace). From the 1963 release.

April 27th

  • Sammy Davis, Jr. Live at Caesars Palace (Neon Tonic).

  • Various Artists Live at Caesars Palace (Neon Tonic).

  • Mary Lou Williams Black Christ of the Andes (Smithsonian Folkways).

  • Various Artists The Colors of Latin Jazz – Cha Cha Soul (Concord Jazz). This collection revolves around recordings of cha-chas and guajiras.

  • Doc and Merle Watson Sittin’ Here Pickin’ the Blues (Rounder Heritage). This reissue has been expanded with eight additional tracks of bluegrass, jazz and bluesy recordings.

  • Various Artists Jazz Moods – Mood Indigo (Concord Jazz). This album revolves around recordings of thoughtful and bluesy performances.

  • Various Artists Bluegrass Express (Rounder). This album compiles several bluegrass recordings that deal with the railroad and trains.

Coming out in May: A 4 CD box set focusing on the Contemporary Record Label and recordings by Woody Herman (a 7 CD box set), Nat King Cole, The Red Heads, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Wild Bill Davidson with the Eddie Condon All Stars, Grover Mitchell, Dave Brubeck, Mel Torme, Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente.
