Ai Confini tra Sardegna e Jazz 2017

"Ai Confini tra Sardegna e Jazz" is one of the few Italian festivals with a clear artistic vision featuring original programming. In the small village of Sant'Anna Arresi attendees won't find musicians who play the festival circuit, rather ones who present rare projects, commissioned by the festival to match a theme. For the 2017 edition, Artistic Director Basilio Sulis was inspired by the annual report on civil rights published by Amnesty International. The 32nd edition therefore was themed after Max Roach's "We Insist! Freedom Now."

Here are photos from the performances of the Ivory Coast's Dobet Gnahorè with her group, the Sylvie Courvoisier-Kenny Wollesen Duo, "Lean Left" (Andy Moore, Ken Vandermark, Paal Nilssen-Love and Terrie Ex), the Aly Keita-Hamid Drake Duo, Joe Chambers as solo artist and as band leader of "M'Boom Repercussion," the "Summit Quartet" (Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, Luc Ex, Hamid Drake), Marilyn Mazur with her project "Shamania," the very interesting Duo of Tiziano Tononi-Susie Ibarra with their project "Drums, Gongs & Bamboo," Tyshawn Sorey (winner of the 2017 MacArthur Foundation's Genius Grant), Kassa Overall, the "Liquid Stone" Trio (Michele Uccheddu, Caterina Genta, Emanuele Balia) and the spectacular Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber that celebrated their 30th anniversary with two great performances.

Once again, an outstanding festival in the fantastic setting of South Sardinia.
