Brian Lynch: Madera Latino - A Latin Jazz Perspective on the Music of Woody Shaw

I ritmi asimettrici appartenenti alla tradizione afrocubana sostanziano questo straordinario doppio CD di Brian Lynch, che con Woody Shaw condivide il triste destino di essere musicista grandissimo, ma poco esposto alla luce dei grandi palcoscenici. Con il trombettista scomparso, Lynch ha anche in comune l'amore per una dimensione espressiva a tutto tondo, capace di incorporare sia una dimensione lirica e notturna, sia una cifra più energica.

Emblematica è in tal senso l'opera in esame, che incorpora l'andamento poliritmico della percussività afro-cubana con i più canonici tempi simmettrici del jazz. Ne discende un'opera avvincente dove tutto funziona a meraviglia e conferma ancora una volta tutta la classe del leader. A far da comune denominatore, la rara capacità di Lynch di infondere con il suo mobile solismo ciò che sembra l'essenza del jazz: comunicativa, pathos, capacità di trasmettere profonde emozioni racchiuse nell'attimo irripetibile e unico dell'improvvisazione jazzistica.

La sua big band coglie pienamente nel segno e riesce a restituire tutta la cifra espressiva di Shaw, tanto obliqua e irregolare quanto lirica e pacata. Le sue composizioni sono qui rivisitate con mirabile intelligenza e originalità per dar luogo ad un progetto di stringente coerenza e rigore.

Un album imperdibile che adequatamante omaggia la magistrale cifra artistica di un musicista duttile e completo, che faceva della raffinatezza armonica e della tecnica sopraffina i principali biglietti da visita.
