Otis Sandsjö: Y-Otis

Conosciuto principalmente per il suo decisivo contributo all'ottimo Speak Low di Lucia Cadotsch, il sassofonista e compositore Otis Sandsjö debutta per l'etichetta finlandese We Jazz con un quartetto di tutto rispetto ed un album dagli intriganti contenuti che non può lasciare indifferenti. Se si esclude la batteria, il resto del quartetto fa ampio uso dei sintetizzatori. Ma non pensate ad un album pesantemente condizionato dall'elettronica perché Sandsjö si rivela ispirato alchimista di suoni sia nella manipolazione dei suoi fiati che nell'assemblare le differenti voci del gruppo.

Musica che potremmo definire jazz per concezione e approccio, per la capacità di intervenire sulla materia prima e scolpirla in forme aeree e indefinite. Ma musica che supera etichette e definizioni, alla ricerca di canali di comunicazione che non possono non tener conto dell'evoluzione avvenuta nei modi di fruizione del linguaggio musicale. Y-Otis si manifesta così come una miscela di suggestioni elettroniche ed acustiche, di melodie e di pulsazioni irregolari, di linguaggi differenti con produzione e post produzione a fungere da valore aggiunto dell'incisione.

«Papa Pata» ha un andamento sinuoso, ruota attorno ad un sottile filo melodico facile alle deviazioni improvvise, a suoni futuristici, a ritmi spezzati. I riffs circolari e le note lunghe con riverberi di Sandsjö creano in «YUNG» un'atmosfera a metà strada tra "ambient" e " psichedelica" con elementi di drum'n' bass ad impreziosire il tutto. «BOO!» ha l'incedere di una danza folklorica visitata da spiritelli giocherelloni e dispettosi, mentre la conclusiva « Multipopix» è una sorta di ninna nanna lisergica tra sogno e incubo, dolce e allucinata. Impressioni, queste, appena sufficienti a descrivere un lavoro complesso, sofisticato, ispirato, ad opera di un musicista dallo sguardo decisamente rivolto al futuro e da seguire attentamente.
