Unica data italiana a Roma per il quintetto del chitarrista austriaco Wolfgang Muthspiel nel corso del recente tour europeo. Il musicista ha proposto i brani del suo ultimo album Rising Grace, pubblicato dalla ECM alla fine dello scorso anno. Della formazione all-star che lo ha inciso è presente solo il contrabbassista Larry Grenadier, mentre il pianista Brad Mehldau, il trombettista Ambrose Akinmusire e il batterista Brian Blade sono stati sostituiti rispettivamente da Gwilym Simcock, Ralph Alessi e Jeff Ballard.
Le composizioni, tutte di Muthspiel ad eccezione di un brano firmato dal pianista ("Antics"), hanno costituito un veicolo per il solismo del leader e dei suoi compagni, che hanno dato prova di una ammirevole verve interpretativa e di un compatto interplay. Tra i brani eseguiti, da segnalare in particolare "Den Wheeler, Den Kenny," il sentito omaggio al trombettista Kenny Wheeler con Alessi in bella evidenza, protagonista di un toccante assolo, e "Intensive Care," introdotto da un magnifico assolo del leader alla chitarra classica, strumento sul quale è capace di fare cose egregie, ma che purtroppo ha utilizzato poco nel corso della serata, dedicandosi prevalentemente all'elettrica, e riprendendola solo per il bis, proponendo "Oak," il brano che chiude anche l'album.
Complessivamente il concerto non ha deluso le aspettative; tutti i musicisti si sono mostrati all'altezza della loro fama, particolarmente il leader che ha saputo fornire il materiale originale in grado di valorizzare il contributo dei singoli, esprimendo un jazz moderno ma saldamente ancorato al mainstream.
