Il trombonista Steve Swell ha già praticato la formula del trio senza contrabbasso, nello storico Barondwon insieme a Ellery Eskelin e Joey Baron, in incisioni la cui lunghezza d'onda è molto diversa da quella del nuovo gruppo Diplomats. Qui con Rob Brown e Harris Eisenstadt riporta in auge un free verace e che tuttavia vive di una struttura interna, preciso nel focalizzare lo sfogo di energia e l'intensità emozionale dei protagonisti.
Senza la pulsazione di uno strumento basso l'incisione funziona in modo egregio, grazie alla consapevolezza con cui la batteria appoggia i dialoghi mordaci degli altri due, incastrandosi perfettamente nell'insieme, stimolando un flusso di idee che, nonostante la dimensione del live, non si interrompe mai: una polifonia perfetta, una proposta senza subalternità conflittuali, una creatività che al proprio interno rifiuta gerarchie piramidali.
We Are Not Obstinate Islands è la documentazione di una serata particolarmente riuscita, in cui tutto quello che si richiede ai musicisti combacia in modo perfetto, struttura e improvvisazione, espressione e esecuzione. Manca il fattore scrittura, ma, come si può ascoltare, riescono a farne a meno senza farla rimpiangere.
