Volume è un disco della PSI, ma potrebbe essere edito da Leo Records, Clean Feed, Victo, Emanem o da altre etichette ancora, magari autogestite da musicisti; nel senso che propone una sperimentazione senza confini, internazionale e trasversale, attuale (in quanto condensa in sé la ricerca improvvisativa degli ultimi trent'anni sul contrabbasso) ma in realtà senza tempo. Ne è protagonista solitario John Edwards, da una ventina d'anni attivissimo nella scena creativa londinese, dove ha collaborato con i personaggi più disparati, tanto da mettere assieme una discografia sterminata.

Le nove improvvisazioni in realtà rivelano strutture ben marcate, che evidentemente derivano da intenzioni talmente precise da delineare l'identità di ogni brano. Si tratta di vere e proprie composizioni istantanee, tutt'altro che occasionali, che riflettono l'amorevole, profondo e intimo lavoro dell'autore sullo strumento. Gli aspetti dinamici e timbrici prevalgono su quelli melodici, armonici e ritmici classicamente intesi, configurando degli itinerari accidentati e imprevedibili, ma circoscritti a nuclei costitutivi di volta in volta differenti, e raggiungendo momenti di grande forza espressiva. Lo strumento è usato con tecniche eterodosse, ma non si ricorre a manipolazioni elettroniche: ne risulta quindi una sonorità concreta e variegata nella sua densità acustica, prodotta sollecitando varie parti dello strumento.

Due sono i brani più anomali del CD, proprio in quanto riferibili a tradizioni ben connotate: la sonorità gonfia e modulata del pizzicato, l'incedere pulsante e concitato fanno di "Sprung" l'episodio più jazzistico, mentre in "From the Depths" l'archetto traccia una melodia lenta, austera e malinconica, che sembra rifarsi a certa tradizione ebraica.
