Joe Baione: Vibe Check
Some albums take time to grow on you, while others hook you from the first play. Vibraphonist Joe Baione's Vibe Check falls into the latter category. Backed by a stellar band featuring Duane Eubanks on trumpet, Toru Dodo on piano, Marco Panascia on bass, and Jerome Jennings on drums, along with Baione's daughter Alexis Baione guesting on vocals, Vibe Check captures a unique blend of modern creativity and nostalgic charm, balancing a cool sixties aesthetic with contemporary sensibilities. With this release, Baione has crafted an album that is as dynamic as it is cohesive.

Vibe Check opens with "The Journey," setting the stage with its upbeat swing and tight ensemble work. The chemistry among the musicians is evident throughout the record, as each player takes their turn to shine. Baione's vibes are front and center, his expressive touch and inventive phrasing providing the foundation for a vibrant musical conversation.

One standout track, "Come Close," introduces a reggae-inspired groove and soulful lyrics penned and sung by Baione's daughter, Alexis. Her expressive vocal delivery and the song's irresistible rhythm create a track that feels fresh and heartfelt while fitting seamlessly within the album's framework.

"Hot Mama" takes a different turn, bringing a joyful Latin rhythm that inspires movement as much as admiration. Its danceable groove and playful improvisations highlight Baione's ability to infuse traditional jazz with a contemporary edge. Tracks like "Lulu" showcase swinging bop energy. At the same time "Lost Control" channels the spirit of soul-jazz legends like Blue Mitchell and Horace Silver with its boogaloo-inspired groove and infectious melody.

Beyond its engaging sound, Vibe Check reflects Baione's journey. After retiring from a 27-year public school band director career, Baione fully committed to his dream of producing a world-class jazz album. His passion and dedication shine through, not only in his playing but also in his thoughtful compositions and arrangements. Many of the tracks, including "Lost Control," "Faith Is My Destiny," and "Quiet Ways," are revivals of songs written by Baione's late father over 40 years ago, adding a deeply personal touch to the record.

The band assembled here is equally impressive. Eubanks brings warmth and lyricism to his trumpet solos, while Dodo's piano work sparkles with finesse and energy. Panascia anchors the group with his steady, melodic basslines, and Jennings' drumming is both propulsive and nuanced. Together, they create an undeniably modern sound yet steeped in classic jazz traditions.

With Vibe Check, Baione proves himself not only as a master vibraphonist but also as a storyteller, weaving together personal history, familial connection, and a passion for jazz into a cohesive and captivating album. Whether drawn to the catchy melodies, the virtuosic performances, or the album's nostalgic nods to mid-century jazz, Vibe Check delivers on all levels.
