Joe Baione – Vibe Check Liner Notes Back when he made a strong impression with his Oh Yeah recording, Joe Baione was already an impressive young vibraphonist who had been immersed in music all of his life. One of three sons, all of whom are musicians, Joe started playing the vibraphone in ninth grade and was working steadily as a teenager. He studied at the University of Maryland E.S. and later met the late great tenor-saxophonist and arranger- composer Benny Golson who became a mentor and a close friend. The release of Oh Yeah gave him many opportunities to tour but he decided that it was more important for him to be home to help raise his family. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Joe Baione was a band teacher for 27 years. He never stopped playing locally and, since retiring from teaching three years ago, he is back as part of the major league jazz scene and very excited to be able to focus on performing. His new recording Vibe Check features six of the vibist’s originals plus three songs written by his late father for a musical over 40 years ago. He is joined by four superb musicians “I have known trumpeter Duane Eubanks since we went to college in the mid-1990s. I have played many times with pianist Toru Dodo and drummer Jerome Jennings who were on my Oh Yeah album, and bassist Marco Panascia is a great player with whom I toured Trinidad.” It is immediately obvious from the swinging opener, “The Journey,” that Joe Baione has grown and matured as a vibraphonist through the years, becoming a very expressive improviser who has his own voice on his instrument. Among his other songs are “The Chase” (which emphasizes a four-note downward pattern in its theme), the joyful “Superhero” (inspired by watching his son at a young age running around while wearing a Superman outfit), the happy samba “Hot Mama,” and the infectious “Lulu.” “Come Close” is particularly special for it features Joe’s daughter Alexis Baione who wrote the lyrics. Her soulful singing over the reggae groove is memorable. Of Joe’s father’s songs, “Lost Control” (given two different treatments) was originally a rock and roll song that is now a catchy boogalooish blues worthy of Horace Silver. “Faith Is My Destiny” (a beautiful melody turned into a bossa nova) and the ballad “Quiet Ways” are also superior pieces well worth reviving. With the release of Vibe Check, Joe Baione is not only realizing his great potential but starting a new chapter in his musical life, telling stories through his songs and showing the jazz world that there is a “new” major vibraphonist on the scene.
