Drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey's new Members... Don't is a contender for recording of the year. He reimagines fellow drummer Max Roach's Members Don't Git Weary from 1968 and reminds us that the original's political and social exhortations remain as evident and concerning today. Sorey's music is extremely powerful. Guitarist James Wengrow is an Aussie with big notes and big ideas. Check out his debut, Emissary, for a full intro to this new gunslinger's music. French pianist Benoit Delbecq is part of Opening Arcs, a project from Ilk Music that will release an EP for eight straight months, coinciding with each new moon and ultimately forming one big arc of music. Bassist Jonas Westergaard & drummer Peter Bruun round out the trio. Enten Eller is an Italian quartet that I was happy to discover. They've been together for over 40 years, and even have a book written about them. And they play!!! Gianluigi Trovesi joins them for Elpida. Also new: drummers Dorota Piotrowska from Poland & Soojin Suh from South Korea, two new albums from trumpeter Steven Bernstein, Joe Lovano and music with poetry by New Orleans' Don Paul & the late English poet Tom Raworth.
