Musician

James Wengrow

Born:

James Wengrow is a Brooklyn-based guitarist and composer from Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. Fusing idioms while maintaining a distinguishable sonic personality, James’ output has been described as “A sprightly collage of experimental jazz, heavy prog, math rock, and neoclassical music...The perfect stop-over for curious rock fans looking to branch to jazz and visa versa" (Bandcamp Daily), and “delving deep into territory that is as much Fugazi as it is [Miles] Davis... a blazing intensity to the heavier passages neatly offset by occasional moments of shimmering beauty” (Sonic Abuse).  Drawing similarities to Ornette Coleman and the Avant-garde, All About Jazz states “...[James’] music summons the same tumult, or at least the same clamor felt in the early 1960s... the spirit and energy of those times is unmistakable.”

'Emissary' is the ambitious debut album from James Wengrow Crypsis Trio, a Brooklyn-based avant-jazz group synthesizing jazz, free improvisation, contemporary classical, and math-rock into an utterly visceral guitar trio experience. Recorded by Joseph Branciforte and mastered by Brent Lambert, the album features six original compositions forged during a tumultuous period of intercontinental displacement, alongside interpretations of John McLaughlin's "This Is For Us To Share" and Thelonious Monk's "Let's Call This." Australian guitarist Wengrow, Danish bassist Mathias Højgaard Jensen, and New York drummer James Paul Nadien embark on impassioned journeys through rapidly shifting sonic terrains—frenetic free passages colliding with polyrhythmic grooves and math-rock precision. This is modern jazz that capitalizes on the structural ties between genres “while exploiting their differences in smart, unique ways.” (Bandcamp Daily)

James Wengrow: Emissary

Read "Emissary" reviewed by Max Kutner

by Max Kutner

On Emissary, his debut as a bandleader, guitarist and composer James Wengrow unleashes a collection of angular micro-symphonies that inhabit an abstract space while remaining meticulously detailed. Joined by a pair of brilliantly adept and aesthetically flexible musicians in bassist Mathias Højgaard Jensen and drummer James Paul Nadien, Crypsis trio can thoroughly explore, develop and present Wengrow's labyrinthine ideas ...

Drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey's new Members... Don't is a contender for recording of the year. He reimagines fellow drummer Max Roach's Members Don't Git Weary from 1968 and reminds us that the original's political and social exhortations remain as evident and concerning today. Sorey's music is extremely powerful. Guitarist James Wengrow is an Aussie with big notes ...
