Ariel Pocock: Touchstone

È un brillante debutto discografico questo di Ariel Pocock, la pianista-cantante di Seattle che il produttore Matt Pierson ha preso sotto l'ala, affiancandole musicisti del calibro di Larry Grenadier, Julian Lage, Eric Harland e Seamus Blake. Un supporto di prim'ordine ma anche una bella responsabilità per una ragazza poco più che ventenne, appena uscita dall'University of Miami Frost School of Music.

Ma la giovanissima Ariel non s'è fatta intimorire: evidenzia buone doti come vocalist, ottime come pianista e s'integra bene con gli illustri colleghi, senza cercare inutili protagonismi. In realtà i brani più interessanti del disco sono quelli unicamente strumentali, dove la leader s'esprime con un disinvolto stile jarrettiano, mettendo in mostra fraseggi incalzanti ("Barrel Roll"), competenza armonica ("When I Fall in Love") e capacità d'interagire improvvisando con raffinatezza (in "All The Things You Are" con Julian Lage).

Nel ruolo di cantante, la voce -luminosa e un po' infantile -deve ancora maturare nelle capacità timbriche e interpretative mentre si mostra già convincente nelle esecuzioni in scat a tempo sostenuto.
Nel complesso un buon livello di maturità interpretativa che darà ottimi frutti in futuro.
