Giovanni Guidi Trio: Tomorrow Never Knows
Guidi è affiancato al contrabbasso da Giovanni Ponticelli e alla batteria da Emanuele Maniscalco - altre giovani promesse del jazz nostrano. Il programma è vario, un po’ sbilanciato sugli “standard del pop” (Beatles, Brian Eno, Björk, Radiohead), ma con la significativa presenza di Komeda, Ornette e del “Maestro” Rava.
Il lavoro è ben suonato ed include alcuni momenti di rilievo, come “Joga” di Björk - che riprende certe sonorità contemporanee del “piano trio”, espresse ad esempio dal Doctor 3 o da The Bad Plus -, “Sleep Safe And Warm” di Komeda - nella quale il piano di Guidi “risuona” in modo molto espressivo - e “Begatto’s Kitchen” dello stesso Guidi.
Il pianista si mostra elegante, capace di misurare il tocco e le pause, efficace nella rielaborazione dei brani. Complessivamente, assai padrone della tecnica. Forse - ed è comprensibile - ancora poco personale, pur in una pluralità di riferimenti stilistici. E, soprattutto, non ancora capace di “guidare” una formazione come il piano trio, dato che i suoi partner svolgono al suo fianco un ruolo troppo defilato, poco più che di mero - per quanto corretto - accompagnamento.
Questo fa di Tomorrow Never Knows un disco interessante, che si ascolta con piacere, ma che appare più una tappa intermedia che un punto d’arrivo. Per un ventiduenne, comunque una bella tappa.
