London soul-jazz sextet The Filthy Six return with “Jack Attack”, the first single from their forthcoming fourth album, Return of The Swagger Junkies: Vol 1., due 27 November 2026 via Denver-based label Color Red.
An unapologetic salute to legendary Hammond organist Jack McDuff, “Jack Attack” draws directly from the blues-soaked, hard-driving soul-jazz workouts McDuff recorded for Prestige and Atlantic. It is The Filthy Six in full flight: a short, sharp instrumental tear-up built around soaring horns, bluesy organ, soulful guitar and one seriously heavyweight rhythm section.
Recorded live to tape, with the band playing together in the same room, the track captures the raw, high-voltage energy that has defined The Filthy Six both on record and on stage. For this session, the horn section was augmented by Mark Brown on baritone sax, giving the track an extra dose of low-end brass power and, as the band puts it, a rare invitation to the “Filthy party”.
Nick Etwell: “Our first single off the record, ‘Jack Attack’, is an homage to the legendary organ king Jack McDuff, an absolute favourite of the band. This track is a nod to his rip-roaring bluesy takes for Prestige/Atlantic, pulling out all the stops with a short, sharp Soul session tear up. Recorded all in the same room, live to tape, the playing here reflects the high voltage energy and authenticity that help signify the Filthy sound. We augmented the horn section for this one, Mark giving the mighty Baritone a rare invitation to the Filthy party! See you on the dance floor…”
Return of The Swagger Junkies: Vol 1. continues The Filthy Six's long-standing obsession with the deeper, dirtier end of soul-jazz. Their sound takes the blueprint of Blue Note and Prestige masters such as Lou Donaldson, Grant Green and Jack McDuff, combining it with funk, blues and Latin boogaloo to create their own contemporary brand of Instrumental Soul.
Formed by London trumpeter Nick Etwell around two decades ago, The Filthy Six began life playing classic soul-jazz repertoire in the basement clubs of Soho. Three albums on legendary UK label Acid Jazz during the 2010s established their reputation as one of the UK's most exciting live soul-jazz outfits.
Their sound is built around soaring horns, soulful guitar, gut-wrenching organ and a relentlessly grooving rhythm section, with the band's collective CV including work with Amy Winehouse, Jack White, Dionne Warwick, Mark Ronson, Robbie Williams, Jamie Cullum, Duran Duran and Madness.
Etwell's own career spans an equally diverse musical landscape, from David Axelrod, Beck, Foo Fighters, Noel Gallagher and Tom Jones to soul and funk legends Mavis Staples, Carla Thomas, Ronnie Spector, Cyril Neville and Fred Wesley, alongside contemporary artists including Jill Scott, Thee Sacred Souls, Jon Cleary and Adrian Quesada. His work with Mumford & Sons included their Grammy-winning album Babel.
With long-term collaborator Snowboy appearing on percussion on select tracks, Return of The Swagger Junkies: Vol 1. sees The Filthy Six return to their core sound: live, analogue, groove-heavy soul-jazz with one foot in the Blue Note and Prestige tradition and the other firmly on today's dance floor.
