Joe Morris Quartet: Today on Earth
Dei sette passaggi proposti quattro durano oltre i dieci minuti, questo perché non è praticamente mai un solo strumentista al centro del processo compositivo; come nell'iniziale "Backbone," un up-tempo travolgente dove si dividono la scena Morris in apertura, poi l'altoista Jim Hobbs ed infine il batterista Luther Gray. Così come nella successiva "Animal," intrisa di richiami giungleschi e calde atmosfere, dove a mettere l'accento è Hobbs, con un solo appassionato, e poi il leader.
Il quartetto s'avventura volentieri anche nei larghi spazi delle improvvisazioni tendenti al free, si veda in tal senso l'aggrovigliata title-track caratterizzata da un susseguirsi di note sciolte e asfissianti, alle quali si contrappongono i respiri e gli scenari rilassati di "Observer".
Today on Earth è un disco che, nel suo insieme, può essere apprezzato da una folta schiera di ascoltatori, perchè il quartetto guidato da Morris riesce nella non facile impresa di far convivere tecnica pura e sentimento, rumore e silenzio.
