Jean-Marc Foltz - Matt Turner - Bill Carrothers: To the Moon

Ecco una musica singolare: pur essendo totalmente improvvisata sembra invece del tutto scritta, rivelando una qualità sonora e un impianto strutturale che potrebbero rientrare nella linea estetica della ECM New Series. Il trio è paritario, ma l'animatore è Foltz, che nelle note di copertina rivela di essersi personalmente ispirato al testo del Pierrot Lunaire di Albert Giraud, pur avendo lasciato ai due partner la più completa libertà: "troviamo della musica da qualche parte... sull'arcobaleno" afferma di aver dato come unico suggerimento al momento di entrare in sala d'incisione.

Fra i tre musicisti regna una grande intesa: l'esibizionismo e il virtuosismo sono banditi, per far posto all'ascolto reciproco, costruendo con pacatezza un raffinato dialogo melodico.

Risulta una musica cameristica, calibrata, che si muove con passo lento e circospetto, intrisa di una vena misteriosa, che in alcuni brani ("Gallows Song" e soprattutto "Knitting Needles") si increspa in toni più inquietanti. "Old Pantomimes" invece procede con una narrazione nostalgica e delicatamente danzante, quasi una rivisitazione decantata della leziosità settecentesca, mentre "To Colombine" si tinge di elegiaca malinconia. Un CD che nel complesso rappresenta pienamente una delle espressioni dell'attualità: possiede un'impronta unitaria, di austera coerenza, riuscendo a coinvolgere.
