Il nonetto colto all'opera in questo CD sotto la direzione del trentasettenne sassofonista e compositore (tutti suoi i temi) californiano Jason Robinson possiede indiscutibilmente il tiro della big band (anche se si avverte l'assenza di ottoni acuti), ma al tempo stesso, vista la presenza di doppia tuba (quando Lowe ripone il trombone basso), doppia percussione e chitarra, non manca di riportare alla mente gruppi attivi un po' di anni or sono quali il Very Very Circus threadgilliano o certi ensemble guidati da Bob Stewart.

La solidità, la pienezza, plastica e spesso scultorea, dell'incedere corale è in effetti il carattere che salta maggiormente all'orecchio, in sinergia con soluzioni improvvisative sempre calzanti, congrue (scorrendo i nomi dei musicisti, del resto, non si farà fatica a capire perché). Sono peraltro proprio queste ultime, in base alle peculiarità del solista di turno, a determinare scenari tutt'altro che monolitici, anzi felicemente articolati, sia pure sempre secondo quella logica costruttivo-compositiva che non manca mai di occupare il centro della musica.

Si assiste, è vero, a passaggi talora lievemente meccanici, ma brani quali "Tiresian Symmetry," "Radiate," "Saros" e "Corduroy," quanto meno, tratteggiano i contorni di una proposta che gratifica l'orecchio senza per questo blandirlo. Mettendo presumibilmente d'accordo amanti del grande ceppo afroamericano così come paladini di un linguaggio più squisitamente contemporaneo.
